Summerlin 101: Everything you need to know about living here

Family Bonding

There are many reasons why Summerlin, Nevada is an ideal place to call home. Known for its warm climate, dramatic desert scenery, and master-planned layout, Summerlin is considered to be the most desirable neighborhood to live in Las Vegas

If you’re thinking of moving to Summerlin, here’s everything you need to know about this wonderful community.

History

What was originally a barren piece of land bought in 1952 for only $3 an acre by millionaire Howard Hughes slowly took shape with careful planning. Official development started in 1990 with the opening of the first Summerlin village, The Hills. It went uphill from there as more houses were built; more families began moving in; and commerce, academia, and recreation rose in response to the demand. Still, development gave way to environmental protection as community leaders and residents made it their advocacy to keep the nearby Red Rock Canyon free from human interference.

Exquisite master plan

There are three associations that constitute Summerlin: North, South, and West. In these three associations are 22 distinct communities called villages. Each village, for its part, also has its respective set of smaller neighborhoods or subdivisions. These villages exude their own charm depending on their location in Summerlin.

Some of the most opulent luxury homes are found in The Ridges and in the subdivisions by the canyons. Sun City has the largest 55+ community in the valley, while Sunrise Manor is perfect for military families as it’s near an Air Force base.

More villages are still being constructed and, with the expansion of Summerlin West, expect a more robust housing inventory to draw in even more families to the Silver State.

To sum it up, there’s a place for everyone in Summerlin!

Schools

There are more than two dozen schools in Summerlin, including 14 public schools and 11 nationally-recognized private schools. Public schools here are under the Clark County School District, Among the top-ranked academic institutions serving Summerlin students are the Tamarus campus of Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas and Advanced Technologies Academy. Families with school-age children are assured of the quality education that their kids will receive in Summerlin’s schools.

Parks and other outdoor venues

None comes close to Summerlin when talking about the sheer number of parks and other outdoor venues that provide wide-open spaces to move around, get active, or be one with nature. Summerlin has an estimated total of 250 parks within its borders, a whole network of trails that connect residential and commercial areas to each other and the surrounding mountains including the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and a bevy of golf courses for lovers of the sport.

Cost of living

Admittedly, the cost of living in Summerlin NV may be steeper than in the rest of Nevada and even higher than the national average. But it more than makes up for this by presenting a world of convenience, comfort, and security like no other. Its mere proximity to Downtown Las Vegas is already an asset in itself as residents don’t need to go far to enjoy top-tier amenities. Plus, it only takes around an hour’s drive to get you to the world-famous Las Vegas Strip!
